Where are the most popular commuter towns in the UK right now? New data reveals the locations where buyer demand is highest, based on the number of people enquiring about available properties on Rightmove.

We look at the London commuter towns where buyer demand is hottest, as well as popular commuter towns for Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Glasgow. We also include house prices, travel times and the frequency of express services to give you some key factors you’ll need to weigh up if you’re searching for the UK’s best commuter locations.

Here we’ve focused on commuter towns or cities with at least 20,000 inhabitants that are within a 45-minute rail journey into a major rail hub for the target city. Rail journey times were based on National Rail figures for the fastest trains for peak weekday services and house prices are drawn from the Rightmove data*.

Hitchin in Hertfordshire comes out on top of the most in-demand London commuter towns that buyers are targeting, closely followed by Harpenden and Chelmsford. Letchworth Garden City and Basingstoke complete the top five.

Comparing buyer interest in commuter towns with demand for the city itself, London showed the greatest difference of the five cities analysed. Properties in Hitchin generated almost twice the number of enquiries per listing as those within London (+96%). Even fifth-placed Basingstoke attracted 71% more enquiries than properties within the capital.

These towns combine strong buyer interest with reliable rail access into the capital. Hitchin offers a 31-minute journey into King’s Cross and 4-5 fast trains per hour, while Harpenden reaches St Pancras International in around 26 minutes. Chelmsford provides access to Liverpool Street in approximately 34 minutes, giving commuters options for a range of central stations.

Prices vary significantly, reflecting their desirability. Harpenden is by far the most expensive at around £948,000, while Basingstoke (£351,104) offers a lower entry point. Interestingly, some of the most popular locations have still seen prices drop year-on-year, such as Chelmsford (-2%) and Basingstoke (-2%), potentially generating more buyer interest.

The most popular Manchester commuter towns among buyers are led by Stockport, which generated 70% more enquiries per listing than Manchester itself. This was well ahead of the next two locations on the list, with Marple (+14%) and Stalybridge (+10%) generating a smaller enquiries boost over the Manchester average. Rochdale and Warrington were close behind, with +9% and +8% respectively.

What sets these towns apart is their exceptionally fast commute. Stockport is just 8 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly, while Stalybridge and Rochdale also offer swift access at around 15 minutes, and Warrington offering a 22-minute journey.

Transport frequency is also a key factor for commuters to consider. Stockport benefits from around six fast trains per hour, while Stalybridge and Rochdale offer four per hour. Marple is less frequent at two per hour but still attracts strong interest, likely due to its lifestyle appeal and picturesque setting on the edge of the Peak District.

Price growth has been strong across most of the Manchester commuter towns, with Stalybridge (+6.1%) and Rochdale (+5.8%) seeing notable increases year-on-year. However, average prices for four out of the five commuter locations on the list were higher than the average Manchester property price (£261,891), suggesting that lifestyle factors were a stronger draw for Manchester’s surrounding towns.

Leamington Spa leads the way among the Birmingham commuter towns that buyers are targeting. Properties in the historic town generate 55% more enquiries than those in Birmingham itself. Warwick, in second place, generates 38% more enquiries than the target city. Rugby (+32%), Solihull (+28%) and Wolverhampton (23%) round out the top five.

Commute times are a major factor for this region. Solihull offers an extremely fast 10-minute journey into Birmingham Moor Street, while Wolverhampton reaches New Street in around 17 minutes. Leamington Spa and Warwick provide slightly longer commutes of 25 to 30 minutes.

Train frequency is consistent, with most towns offering around two to three services per hour. Wolverhampton stands out with around six per hour.

Prices reflect the strength of these markets, with Solihull (£423,377) and Warwick (£374,555) sitting at the higher end. Only Wolverhampton (£229,094) was priced lower than the Birmingham average (£245,613), suggesting that lifestyle factors are a key driver of demand for Birmingham’s surrounding towns, as with Manchester.

Among the Bristol commuter towns generating the most buyer enquiries per property, historic Bath leads the way. However, Bristol’s commuter belt shows similar or lower levels of demand than the city itself. Bath generates 6% more enquiries than Bristol and second-placed Yate +1%, while Newport (-3%), Swindon (-23%) and Gloucester (-27%) complete the top five.

Bath’s popularity is driven by both lifestyle and connectivity, with a quick 11-minute journey into Bristol Temple Meads and fast trains into London Paddington taking only 1 hour 20 minutes. Yate also stands out for its speed, offering a 20-minute commute into Bristol, but with fewer services at around one per hour.

Prices vary widely, with Bath sitting above £500,000, while Newport offers a much lower average price of £235,275. Bath has seen a price decline of nearly 5% year-on-year, which may be helping to sustain demand.

Scotland currently stands out for particularly strong demand and a very active market compared to the rest of the UK. Both the city of Glasgow and its commuter belt show significantly higher enquiry levels than the other four regions in this study.

Comparing London with Glasgow, for example, reveals that the Scottish city generates over eight times as many enquiries per property as London. The latest house price index also shows that Scotland properties currently average only 31 days to find a buyer, compared to 68 in London (June 2026).

Paisley was the only commuter town in the list to generate more enquiries than Glasgow, with a 1% uplift in demand. Dumbarton was the second most popular commuter town, but generated 4% fewer enquiries than the target city. Cumbernauld, Hamilton and Motherwell complete the ranking.

Transport links are a key factor for Glasgow’s commuter belt. Paisley offers an exceptionally fast 9-minute journey into Glasgow Central, with up to 8–10 trains per hour, making it one of the most frequent services in any commuter market included in this study. Other towns such as Motherwell and Dumbarton also benefit from strong connections, typically taking 16 to 25 minutes into Glasgow.

All the Glasgow commuter towns in the list are also more affordable than the city itself, which commands an average property price of £190,323. Prices start from an average of £145,287 in Paisley to £172,598 in Hamilton, making them attractive to a wide range of buyers. All five of the towns listed have seen price growth year-on-year, with annual growth in enquiries per listing also reinforcing strong demand in the region.
